Building Trust and Engagement Through Consistency and Connection

At EM Tuition, we understand that meaningful progress begins with trust. For one student, who had previously refused education and struggled to engage with alternative provision, the turning point came through patience, empathy, and consistency.

Background

When tuition first began, the student found it difficult to engage with any form of structured learning and was hesitant to allow tutors into his space. He had previously refused school and other provision, so the focus from the outset was not on academic work, but on building connection and trust.

Tutors Melanie and Kelly approached the situation with care and sensitivity, recognising that progress would only come through relationship-building. They made it a priority to establish a reliable routine and to show consistency – turning up for sessions even on the days when the student said he didn’t want them there. Over time, this reliability demonstrated respect for his boundaries and helped him begin to feel safe enough to engage.

Approach

In the early sessions, learning was secondary to connection. Activities the student already enjoyed, such as Uno and Frustration, were used to create a relaxed, positive environment. These games became a bridge for communication and confidence, allowing learning to be introduced naturally and without pressure.

Respect for his environment was also key. As tuition took place in the student’s home, the tutors made sure to ask permission before making even small changes – such as moving an item or using the facilities. This attention to his sense of space and control helped build mutual respect and reinforced his trust in the process.

Progress

Gradually, the student began to look forward to sessions. He started asking the tutors to stay longer and even requested additional visits on days they weren’t scheduled. His engagement grew from cautious participation to genuine enthusiasm.

The care home also noticed this transformation. Staff reported that he was setting an alarm on his Alexa to make sure he was awake and ready for tuition – a clear sign of his growing motivation and commitment. His care worker described it as “lovely to observe him during his sessions and see the progress he is making.”

Outcome

Through a consistent, relationship-led approach, the student has built genuine trust and confidence in his learning journey. His shift from complete refusal to eager participation shows the power of patience, empathy, and respect in re-engaging young people with education.

This case stands as a strong example of how EM Tuition’s tailored, person-centred approach can transform attitudes toward learning and create lasting change.
