Primary Education at Key Stage 1

The National Curriculum starts at Key stage 1 (Year 1 and 2 in the infants) and continues through to Key stage 2 (Years 3-6 in the juniors) and on into secondary education. It builds on the learning that has gone on in the foundation stage.

The skills and knowledge taught come from the National Curriculum and are organised in a cross curricular way to incorporate learning in Science, Geography, History, Design & Technology, Art and PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education).

Links are made to Literacy, Maths, RE, PE and Music when possible.

All state run schools have a statutory responsibility to fulfil the requirements laid out by the National Curriculum.

Tests and Assessments

Year 1 phonics screening check

The child should be able to read 40 words out loud to a teacher. This will provide information on whether extra reading help is needed. If a child does need extra help they will have another assessment in Year 2.

Key stage 1 test

KS1 test covers:

  • English reading
  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Maths

English

Through Key Stage 1, the English subject is designed to help pupils work towards being able to read reasonably quickly and puzzle out any new words that they encounter for themselves. They are also taught how to write in complete sentences.

Maths

In mathematics, the focus is usually on being able to count, read and write numerals up to 100 and write in words up to the 20th digit. Students are also helped to understand the concepts of ‘more’ and ‘less’ (addition and subtraction), especially on a number line.

Science

Key Stage 1 Science aims to develop the learner’s inquisitiveness and observation skills. It also requires students to be able to identify and classify certain things, in addition to collecting data.
